What do you think about education?
Extensive consultation took place in 2015 at the beginning of the Mining Minds project, and our community worked hard to provide us with the feedback to make this project authentically local. Research shows us that the ‘wrap around’ model is key in addressing the mosaic of issues affecting children and young people across the community. Having a whole of community approach has required the engagement of various stakeholders in the early stages of this project. This included educators, families and young people in educational settings, health services, family support projects, early intervention programs, youth services, community services and local business.
Extensive research into current best practice in education has been undertaken and the proposed projects are supported by what research shows us is best practice in education and influenced by strategies that have the highest effect size.
Practitioner Enquiry and Action Research models have been on-going processes supporting thinking and learning in all of our leadership and pedagogy projects. Cycles of enquiry that build capacity for learning and change allow participants to direct their own learning and apply a framework to their professional development that they can adapt and repeat throughout their career.
What do we know about education and what works?
What are we doing in our communities?
In 2019 Mining Minds is working with individual education sites across the Olympic Dam Region on professional development programs supported by Practitioner Enquiry processes. Local parent partnership programs supporting families will be run in the Community Hub and in partnership with other agencies.
In addition to educator and parent capacity building, Mining Minds is conducting two research projects in 2019. These include a Post-School Pathways research project and an Early Years Mapping project in consultation with local families, leaders, educators and other key stakeholders.
How do I connect with the Mining Minds Partnership?
The development of the Community Hub is a partnership outcome and has become home to several weekly groups as well as visiting specialists and agencies.
The Community Hub drop-in times are 10am-2pm Weekdays. The Hub hosts the BHP community investment projects Mining Minds, Time for Wellbeing and Strengthening Our Families (also located in the Hospital).
The renovation of the shopfront that hosts the BHP community investment projects located in the Hub has been an exciting collaboration between BHP and some talented locals contributing to the design of the space. The Community Hub re-opening will be celebrated with an official launch event, to be advertised via Facebook.
